Caged Nautical Pendant Light

Ship's lighting, scaled for a kitchen. A wide black steel cone, a protective wire cage below it, and two walnut bands screwed through the frame with visible brass hardware. The socket is solid brass and the cord is twisted fabric. Every join is exposed, because on the original fixtures this form comes from, every join had to be serviceable.

The cage is the detail people reach for. It puts a deliberate line pattern around the bulb, and with a clear Edison filament inside it throws a faint grid of shadow onto the surfaces below — the reason this style has stayed in demand for a decade while other industrial looks came and went.

Three materials, no paint tricks

• Black steel shade. A broad, shallow cone that pushes light straight down onto a counter or table instead of spilling it sideways.
• Walnut bands. Two wood collars, above and below the shade, fixed with exposed screws. They break up the black and warm the whole fixture.
• Brass socket and fittings. Left unlacquered in tone, so it sits between the black and the walnut rather than competing with either.
• Twisted fabric cord. Not a plain plastic flex — a braided cord that suits the period the fixture is drawn from.

Specifications

Where it works

At 11 inches across this is a supporting fixture rather than a centrepiece, which makes it ideal in multiples. Run two or three over a kitchen island spaced 24 to 30 inches apart, or hang a single one over a sink, a breakfast nook, a workbench, or a stairwell landing. It suits farmhouse, coastal, industrial, and warehouse-conversion interiors, and it holds its own against brick, reclaimed timber, and painted shiplap. Hang the bottom of the cage 30 to 36 inches above a counter.

Frequently asked questions

How big is this caged pendant light?

The shade is 11 inches in diameter and the fixture is 9.1 inches high (28 x 23 cm), not counting the cord. It is a compact pendant, well suited to hanging in a row of two or three.

How much does it cost?

$450 USD.

What is it made of?

Metal throughout, finished in black, with walnut-colored wood bands and brass-toned socket hardware. The cord is twisted fabric.

What bulb does it take?

One standard E26 (North America) or E27 (Europe) screw-base bulb, not included. A clear Edison filament bulb suits this fixture best — the cage and the exposed bulb are the point of the design, and a filament makes the cage cast its shadow pattern. Choose 2700K for the warm vintage tone.

Does the cage come off?

The cage is part of the fixture's structure and is fitted to the lower walnut band. It is designed to stay in place, and removing it would change the proportions the design depends on.

Is it dimmable?

The fixture runs on a common wall switch and has no built-in dimming, so it depends on the bulb. A dimmable LED or Edison bulb on a compatible wall dimmer will dim — and this is a fixture worth dimming, because the filament is visible.

How long is the cord?

150 cm / 59 inches of twisted fabric cord, which suits standard 8 to 10 foot ceilings and can be shortened at installation. It can also be lengthened as required for vaulted or double-height ceilings — contact us before ordering.

Can I hang several in a row over an island?

Yes, and it is the best use of this size. Space them 24 to 30 inches apart on centre, and keep the bottom of the cage 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Each pendant needs its own ceiling outlet unless you are mounting them from a linear canopy.

Can it be used in a bathroom, on a porch, or outdoors?

No. Despite the nautical styling, it is rated for indoor use only and is not damp- or wet-rated. It should not be installed above a shower or tub, or in any covered outdoor location.

Will it work outside the United States?

Yes. It accepts AC 110-240 V and carries certification compatible with North America, Europe, Saudi Arabia, and Australia. Use an E26 bulb on 110-120 V supply and an E27 bulb on 220-240 V.
