Coloraxis Pendant Lamp D155

The Coloraxis D155: four painted layers, stacked and spaced apart. A yellow dome at the crown, a red ring beneath it, a wide blue disc, and a red cylinder holding the bulb at the base — each element held off the next on slim chrome posts so daylight and lamplight pass through the gaps between them.

The colors are not decoration applied to a shade. Each tier is a separate painted surface that catches light from the layer above and passes it down, so the light arriving in the room has picked up warmth from the yellow and depth from the red on its way through. Look up into it and you see the layers lit from within; look at it from across the room and you see a stack of flat, confident color.

What sets this one apart

• Genuinely dimmable. Compatible with standard dimmer switches — and this fixture rewards it, because dimming shifts which layers glow and which fall dark.
• Sloped ceilings up to 30°. Most pendants demand a flat ceiling. This one is designed to hang true on a slope, which makes it usable in attic conversions, A-frames, and vaulted rooms where the options are usually limited to recessed cans.
• Layered, not printed. Four separate metal elements spaced on posts, not one shade with a pattern on it. The gaps are structural and they are where the light escapes.
• Colour with a pedigree. Primary yellow, blue, and red on spun metal is the Danish and space-age vocabulary of the 1960s and 70s, and it still reads as deliberate rather than novelty.

Specifications

Where to hang it

At 11.8 inches this is a mid-scale pendant that works singly or in a row. Hang one over a breakfast table or a reading chair, two or three over a kitchen island spaced 24 to 30 inches apart, or a single one in a child's room or a studio where the color is the point. Keep the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above a counter, 30 to 34 inches above a tabletop. Because it handles slopes up to 30 degrees, it is one of the few decorative pendants that will hang correctly in a loft conversion or under a vaulted ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the Coloraxis D155, and how much does it cost?

11.8 inches wide and 9.8 inches high (30 x 25 cm), not counting the wire. $390 USD.

Is the Coloraxis D155 dimmable?

Yes. It is compatible with standard dimmer switches, which are not included. Use a dimmable bulb and a compatible wall dimmer. Dimming is worth doing here — at low levels the layered discs light unevenly and the color separation becomes much more pronounced.

Can it be installed on a sloped or vaulted ceiling?

Yes, on slopes up to 30 degrees. The fixture is designed to hang plumb on an angled ceiling, which most decorative pendants cannot do without an additional adapter.

What bulb does it take?

One E26 (North America) or E27 (Europe) screw-base bulb, 40 W maximum — either a 40 W incandescent or an LED equivalent. Do not exceed 40 W. Bulbs are not included. Choose 2700K warm white to keep the yellow and red tiers warm rather than washed out.

What colors does it come in?

One colorway, which uses all three: a yellow dome, a blue disc, and red elements above and below.

Is it hardwired?

Yes. It wires directly to a ceiling junction box and is operated from a wall switch or dimmer. There is no plug and no inline cord switch.

How long is the wire?

150 cm / 59 inches as supplied, and it adjusts easily to the height you want. Longer wire is available on request for double-height rooms — contact us before ordering.

Will it suit a child's room?

It works well — the primary colors read as playful without being themed, so it will not look outgrown in a few years. It is a hardwired ceiling fixture, so it hangs safely out of reach.

Can it be used in a bathroom or outdoors?

No. It is rated for indoor use only and is not damp- or wet-rated.

Will it work outside the United States?

Yes. It is certified for North America, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Use an E26 bulb on 110-120 V supply and an E27 bulb on 220-240 V.
