The Smithfield Suspension is a masterclass in understated elegance. Designed by Jasper Morrison, it follows the "Super Normal" approach—creating objects that are highly functional, quietly beautiful, and devoid of unnecessary ego. With its deep, rounded aluminum body and clean profile, it provides powerful direct light, making it a favorite for modern kitchens, dining areas, and professional workspaces.
The bottom of the shade features an injection-molded opalescent polycarbonate diffuser. This ensures the light is widespread and "soft," eliminating the harsh hot spots typically associated with industrial-style domes. The body is crafted from high-grade aluminum, available in a variety of finishes including high-gloss black, matte black, white, mud (grey-brown), and even vibrant red or green. While it appears purely industrial, its soft curves allow it to sit comfortably in both "hard" architectural spaces and "soft" residential interiors.
Expert Tips
Kitchen Islands: Its 23-inch diameter provides a significant "footprint" without feeling bulky, making it ideal for task lighting over prep surfaces.
Low Profile: Because the fixture is relatively shallow (only 8.5" high), it is an excellent choice for rooms with standard ceiling heights where a traditional "tall" pendant might feel intrusive.
Monochromatic Impact: Use the "Mud" or "Matte Black" finishes to anchor a neutral-toned room with a sophisticated, architectural focal point.
Is it dimmable? Yes, it is fully dimmable when used with dimmable LED bulbs or the integrated LED "Pro" version.
Can it be installed on a sloped ceiling? Yes, the steel suspension cable system allows for easy adjustment on angled surfaces.
What is the "Pro" version? The Smithfield Pro features a built-in LED chip (CRI 95) for superior color accuracy and energy efficiency compared to the standard screw-base version.
